Lutz Gregor’s documentary Mali Blues takes a vivid look at the West-African nation’s rich and diverse musical fabric, following folk star Fatoumata Diawara, Tuareg guitarist Ahmed Ag Kaedi, ngoni grandmaster Bassekou Kouyaté and rapper Master Soumy in their pursuit for peace and freedom of speech. The New York Times: “Despite the urgency of the situation the musicians face, when they’re not doing their work, the movie is quiet, observant, taking in the austere beauty of the land and the people.”
