Playlist: New & Notable at Le Guess Who? 2018 Fri Sep 14th As every year, an important part of the Le Guess Who? program is about making new discoveries; experiencing new sounds and artists that might become new personal favorites in the future. To help you explore the extensive program of Le Guess Who?, we’ve created a playlist with some of the new(ish)/upcoming and noteworthy acts playing the festival. Amongst them are a couple that you might already know, but under a different name. Starting off the playlist is Vive la Void, which is the solo project of Moon Duo's Sanae Yamada. There’s also Ancient Shapes, the fierce and rebellious new brainchild of songwriter Daniel Romano; Joe Cardamone was formerly a member of The Icarus Line; and FACS is a modern art rock outfit that rose from the ashes of Chicago band Disappears, and is joined by Cat Power’s Alianna Kalaba. Of course, there’s a range of genres and sounds to explore here. On the more pop side of the program, we’d recommend the cinematic Americana of Vera Sola, the richly evocative poetry and fun-loving melodies of Alabaster DePlume, and the delicate, classical and R&B-infused folk music from Kelsey Lu, who’s already garnered acclaim from Solange and Blood Orange, amongst many others. In need of some more electronic-oriented music? There’s the playful sounds of Russia’s Kate NV, or the more club-orientated work of Linafornia and Dominican producer Kelman Duran. On the jazz side of the spectrum (but venturing far beyond) are the freewheeling jams of London four piece Ill Considered, Tom Skinner’s Hello Skinny and Belgium’s STUFF. (all three are curated by Shabaka Hutchings), and then we haven’t even mentioned the spirited and community-driven BCUC from South Africa, experimental cellist and electronic composer Lucy Railton, and post-punk collective Crack Cloud. Dive right in and explore a range of sounds below, as there’s surely something for your tastes here that you haven’t discovered yet. Listen to the playlist below via Spotify. You can also also stream it via Deezer or Apple Music.
